The composition shingle is by far the most popular and widely used residential roofing material on the market today. It is estimated that about 80% of all homes in the Southern California area have composition shingle roofs installed. Composition shingles, sometimes referred to as asphalt shingles or fiberglass shingles, are essentially made using asphalt, paper, crushed rock, and fiberglass which are all compressed into a highly durable shingle strip. These shingles are lightweight, very durable, and can be very cost-effective, depending on which shingle you choose.
Their popularity is also due to the fact that they are available in a wide variety of styles and colors, making them an ideal product for those who would not only like to save money, but who also don’t want to sacrifice aesthetic value. It is also easy to get the materials you want, because it is so widely used – something also to consider if you ever need additional material later on, to repair damage. And, unlike some tile or slate roofs, asphalt shingles can be walked on without worry.
Probably the most common type of composition shingle is called a 3-tab shingle. It is very popular, particularly in the Eastern parts of the US, and it is the most economical of all the types of asphalt shingles, although it is very flat in profile. More common in Southern California are the laminated shingles, which consist of several layers, bonded together to get a dimensional look. Because laminated shingles are very close in price to a traditional 3-tab shingle and offer a much richer look, most California homeowners see any reason to use the 3-tab shingle anymore.
